Bonseki: the art of miniature landscapes

Bonseki (tray rocks) is yet another ancient Japanese art. Using black lacquer trays, white sand, pebbles, rocks and a variety of delicate tools like feathers, spoons and flax brooms, artists create intricate sceneries. The trays can be either oval or rectangular and typically measure about 24″ x 14″.
